There was different forms of slavery and everyone wasn’t beaten daily or mistreated—it’s a lifestyle and mentality. Slavery was agreements and contracts many times enforced with fear or attachment. One of the men still lives on the plantation “rent free” but it’s implied that he isn’t paid for his work. I’ve seen old court documents of homeless melanated people asking the court to be enslaved under contract bond to a certain person to eat and have a roof over their head. That’s slavery. It was not all “whips and chains”. That’s why it lasted for so long.
